Why have I been referred to an endodontist?
Your dentist has determined that proper diagnosis and treatment of your tooth may require the expertise of a specialist who has received advanced training. We will always first evaluate the problem and discuss with you our recommendations and your options before any treatment is initiated.
What is a root canal?
The inner part of your tooth contains tissue called the pulp. If the pulp becomes diseased due to a deep cavity or filling or due to trauma, the tooth becomes infected. The tooth may become symptomatic; however, sometimes there may be no symptoms. The tooth will not heal unless the diseased pulp tissue is removed. A root canal is the procedure in which we remove the pulp; and after thoroughly cleaning the space within the tooth, a rubber-based material is used as a filling. Afterward you will usually need to schedule an appointment with your regular dentist for a permanent restoration to protect the tooth (permanent filling or crown).
At your office visit
Please let us know any medications you may be taking or any other needs that you have. If you require premedication with an antibiotic (due to a prosthetic heart valve, artificial joint, or other condition in which your physician recommends this) please take as needed or let us know in advance if you need our assistance in phoning in the necessary antibiotic prescription.
What to expect during treatment
Expect treatment to require about an hour (on average). Usually the procedure is performed in just one appointment; however occasionally, in more difficult cases, it may require an additional appointment. We will use a local anesthetic to "numb" the tooth completely. Fortunately, advances in dentistry enable us to perform the procedure comfortably. Afterward you will be able to drive yourself home; however, if you prefer to bring along a friend, please feel free to do so.
Dr. Gilbert uses advanced technology in the use of the dental microscope and digital (computerized images) x-ray system. More precise treatment with considerably less exposure from x-rays is now possible due to these innovations. Proper sterility and asepsis is continually monitored and maintained for our office.
